    EXERCISE No. 10.—Rubbing of arms, shoulders and round armpits (with deep knee-bending). The first degree.—This consists of lo movements, and each move- ment falls into a measure of five beats. 1st beat: The outside of the one arm (which should be extended to the front) is stroked upwards from the finger tips to the neck. and beat: The same side of the arm is stroked downwards to the finger tips. 3rd beat; The under side is stroked from the finger tips to the armpit, followed by a cross-rubbing of the nearest part of the breast inwards from the armpit. 4th beat: The rubbing hand is swung back again under the arm just rubbed, and takes hold of the shoulder-blade as far back as possible, while the top of the opposite shoulder is grasped by the other hand. 5th beat: Both arms are stretched out to the front, the last- mentioned hand in its course stroking the hitherto unrubbed arm from the shoulder to the finger tips, where the hands are separated. The right and the left hand should, of course, alternately start this combined rubbing movement, each of them five times. Inhalation should begin when the last part of the 3rd beat is performed, and should continue during the 4th and 5th beats, while exhalation should begin at the same time as the ist beat, and should last during the ist, 2nd, and part of the 3rd beat. For this reason it is always advisable to let the pupil take a preliminary inhalation just before the first of the ten combined movements is started. The second degree.—A bending and re-straightening of the legs, without heel-raising and with the feet apart, should be performed during the first half of each combined rubbing movement ; that is, at the same time as the breath is being exhaled. There are in all ten such knee-bendings performed, and they should be done rather quickly, and thus differently from the knee-bendings in the breathing exercise, which are peTformed slowly ; the heels also in this exercise are separated, whilst in the breathing exercise they are kept together. Fig. 105 shows the various beats of the first degree of this exercise, while the second degree is illustrated by Fig. 106.
