    io8 EXERCISE No. 17.—Trunk-twisting, with rubbing of the breast. The upper part of the body should be twisted round as far as possible, 20 times, alternately to the right and left. The feet should be placed well apart and remain firmly on the floor; the twists should be performed from the waist only and not by moving the feet. The massage is done as follows : Each time the trunk is twisted from the one side to the other, both palms should stroke across the breast in an opposite direction to that in which the trunk is moving. The massage would have no effect whatever if the hands were to travel the same way as the trunk moves. The one hand should stroke to and fro above the nipples, the other just below them. But in order to avoid creating any unevenness in the carrying of the shoulders, the same hand should not always be uppermost. The hands may change about when half the number of rubbings have been made, or their position may be varied each day. The first degree.—The movements must be done slowly, corre- sponding with a steady respiration. Inhale when the trunk is twisted in the one direction, and exhale when it is twisted back again in the opposite direction, and so on. The second degree.—The trunk may now be twisted quickly to right and left alternately. By degrees the pupil will be able to do two or three double twists while performing one deep respiration. In Fig. 119 Ib shows how the movement is started (or finished) and Per shows a middle phase. The first three of the Breslau boys in Fig. 120 are fairly correct. The hands might be held slightly higher upon the breast. The 4th boy is altogether wrong (compare the pose of Per on Fig. 119). Adult girls should study “ ^ly System for Ladies ” to see how this exercise is arranged for them.
