    diet for too long a time; in this state the prevaihng constitutional diathesis keeps up and modifies the subsiding inflammation, at the same time that it renders him susceptible of the influence of atmospheric causes. This state of things is usually connected with considerable congestion of the sclerotic coat, a debilitated state of the circulation, and a disordered condition of the mucous membrane of the alimentary canal, as well as of the rest of the digestive organs. Cupping on the temple is usually advisable, followed by a blis- ter at the back of the neck, with di-astic purgatives and bark. Belladonna should also be appHed to the eyebrow, with the view of preventing closure of the pupU. If these means be adopted at the outset of the disease, they will generally prove efiectual, the patient being allowed a nutritious, not a stimulating diet, and de- fended from all exposm-e to vicissitudes of temperatm-e. The eye must be kept closed, and all lotions scrupulously avoided, as well as fomentations, which, by wetting the eyehds, are apt to produce an injm-ious effect. Sometimes it may be necessary to repeat the abstraction of blood, but this must never be carried to the extent of reducing the force of the circulation, and occasionally the con- dition of the digestive organs cannot be corrected without a mild alterative mercm-ial com-se; but great care must be taken not to subject the system at large to the influence of this agent, or its irritabihty will probably be greatly increased, and the inflamma- tion thereby aggravated instead of being reheved. On THE Depression of Cataract. By the depression of a cataract is understood the depressing it do^vnwards and backwards below the axis of vision, and leaving it imbedded in the vitreous humom-. If, on account of the reasons ah-eady stated in speaking of the operation of extraction, that operation cannot with propriety be performed, the cataract being hard, depression must be had re- cour.se to. Tnflmg as this operation may appear, it is very liable to pro- duce inflammation of the internal tunics of the globe, which is very difficult to control, and often leads to serious consequences
