In addition to the important papers mentioned in the title, this work also contains a translation of Girtanner's memoir on irritability, and observations on animal electricity, oxygen, etc. Beddoes (1760-1808), English physician, whose medical writings were distinguished by their vivid presentation of the phenomena of disease, was especially concerned with consumption. He founded the Pneumatic Institute at Clifton for the treatment of diseases by inhalation. It was there that his assistant, Humphrey Davy, discovered the anesthestic properties of nitrous oxid.
