    PREVENTION OF ATMOSPHERIC POLLUTION BY W. F. Saxton, Deputy Chief Public Health Inspector Investigations into the degree of pollution of the atmosphere have continued and the facts and figures in this section of the report have been collated from information derived from the apparatus installed at seven atmospheric pollution stations within the city boundary, the apparatus in each case consisting of a Standard Deposit Gauge and a Lead Peroxide Instrument. In addition, there is installed in the laboratory at No. 12 Market Buildings a Volu¬ metric Smoke and Sulphur Dioxide apparatus. During the year the improvement recorded last year continued at three of the stations and the increase in deposit of solid matter at the other four may be attributable to the rather higher rainfall during 1956. It is an accepted fact that fluctuations in deposited matter are often the result of variations in weather. That improvement has taken place is indicated by comparing the figures recorded in tons per square mile in 1951 and 1956 :— Headingley City Centre Temple¬ newsam Armley Park St. James’s Hospital Burley Park 1951 .. 228 403 162 532 199 714 1956 .. 129 287 100 284 195 319 Estimation of Atmospheric Pollution by the Lead Peroxide Method.—The table on page 194 gives the estimation of sulphur compounds in the atmosphere in the years 1955 and 1956. The station showing the highest monthly average was Hunslet (4-53) and the lowest Headingley(2-65). The monthly average is shown in graph form on page 197. Deposit Gauges.—The table on page 195 shows the monthly deposit of solids from the atmosphere in tons per square mile for the years 1955 and 1956. The station with the highest monthly average was Hunslet (35-94) and the lowest Templenewsam (10-09). The table on page 196 shows the records from 1926 to 1956 of the deposits of solids from the atmosphere in tons per square mile. The monthly average of all stations is shown in graph form on page 198.
