    other was treated in Leeds General Infirmary. In none of the cases was it possible to trace the source of infection ; faeces and urine specimens from other members of the three families were all bacterio- logically negative. Seven typhoid and paratyphoid contacts were kept under observation as were four chronic typhoid carriers. During the year one doubtful case of smallpox was referred to the Department for a second opinion ; the case was diagnosed as scabies. In addition, 9 “ other ” cases were visited at the request of medical practitioners and these were diagnosed as follows :— toxic food rash (i), allergic rash (1), rubella (1), sweat rash (1), scarlet fever (1), septicaemia (i), neuritis (1), suppurative meningitis (1) and polio¬ myelitis (1). Measles.—The number of accepted cases of this disease was 983 as compared with 11,243 last year (an epidemic year for measles). Of the total cases, 18 were treated in Seacroft Hospital. There were no deaths as compared with 3 in 1955. Whooping Cough.—There was a considerable increase in the number of accepted cases of whooping cough during the year, 1,383 as compared with 563 last year and 812 in 1954. Of the total cases, 79 (5'7 Per cent.) were treated in Seacroft Hospital. There were 2 deaths. Puerperal Pyrexia.—There was a decrease in. the number of accepted cases of this disease during the year, 113 as compared with 168 last year and 58 in 1954. Of the total, 95 (84-1 per cent.) occurred in hospitals and institutions and 18 (15-9 per cent.) in the practices of general medical practitioners and midwives. There were no deaths. Ophthalmia Neonatorum.—The number of accepted cases of this disease was 11 as compared with 10 last year and 9 in 1954. One of the cases died at the age of 5 days from prematurity ; the remainder recovered. It was not necessary to treat any case in Seacroft Hospital. Erysipelas.—Accepted cases of this disease numbered 72 as compared with 91 last year. Of these, 7 (97 per cent.) were treated in Seacroft Hospital. There were no deaths. Malaria.—Two cases of malaria were notified during the year ; the infection in each case was contracted abroad.
