    ADVERTISEMENT. THE present volume owes its existence to the following circumstances. I was applied to in the autumn to prepare some additional letter-press for a second edition of my Engravings of the Brain; and it occurred to me that it would be suitable to introduce in it a summary account of the functions of the nervous system, which I accordingly drew up, something in the following form. This publication, however, was for the time aban- doned; and I likewise have altered my mind about it, and think it better to accompany the plates with a succinct anatomical expla- nation only, which will be the plan adopted. But in the mean time the form in which I had cast my survey of the nervous system,
