    doubted: nor is there any reason to doubt, that the general tension of the muscular and nervous tissues, the convulsive paroxysms, and universal disturbance of functions, occasioned by venereal indulgence, are still more injurious than visceral congestion. But the grand prin- ciple of mischief in this matter, is the peculiar excitement of the nervous system. Physiologists have indulged in a great deal of conjecture and speculation concerning the “ animal spirits—nervous fluid—vital elec- tricity,” &lc. &c., but as yet, it is all conjec- ture and speculation. We know that, by some means or other, the influence of the will is conveyed through certain nerves, to the organs of voluntary motion—that the sense of touch is conveyed, or reflected, or transmitted from the surface, through certain other nerves, to the brain :—and that vital energy is distributed through certain other nerves, from the general and particular centres of action, to the several organs, for the supply
