It is true, that in the perfectly natural, un- depraved, and healthy state of human nature, when all the laws of constitution and relation are observed, instinct, so far as the physical welfare of man is concerned, would be a suffi- cient law to govern sexual commerce :—and so far as physiology and our knowledge of the nature of things may govern our reasonings on this subject, there is every evidence that, in such a state, the sexual commerce of the human species would not be much more fre- quent than that of other species of animals, of the same class, whose period of pregnancy is the same. But the moment man begins to violate the laws of constitution and relation, either in diet, or in any other respect, that moment he begins to deprave his instinctive propensities, and to develope a power of ap- petite which, the more it is yielded to, the more it is increased ; and leads to the worst
