No text description is available for this image![20.37] ry bs yp / oe abs the stock, of walnut-wood, has a gracefully formed butt, and is profusely inlaid with groups of various figures in engraved and coloured mother-o’-pearl, intercepted by spiral scrolls in brass; the subjects are divided one from the other by bands of polished stag’s horn; the barrel—38} a. long— ridged at the breech, tapers towards the muzzle, where it the lock, on the wheel and pyrites principle, has a dolphin- like guard to the wheel, and is impressed with a gunsmith’s mark, IP with a star beneath is circular and flat in form, painted in polychromatic colours; on the front face, carved in low relief, is the motifs; on the reverse side, an eagle attacking a hare, with a band carved with dog and strapwork From the Collection of S. Kennedy, Esq. stock, of walnut-wood, simply inlaid with laurel wreaths, bifurcated marine monsters, and scrollwork in brass, mother-o’-pearl and stained ivory; beneath the lock plate is the inscription “ ANNo 1638, Limpureum ME FeciT”’ the wheel and pyrites principle, with traces of engraving on the lock plate PISTOL—doubtless German, abowt 1580—the _ stock, which is of some close-grained hard wood, is almost entirely overlaid with minute concentric scrolls in en- graved and polished stag-horn, in some cases stained green, yellow and red; this general design is at intervals. intercepted by animals and grotesques in the same medium ; the hand of the inlayer is recognised but uniden- tified ; the general proportions of the stock are excellent, having the large spheroidal pommel; the lock is on the wheel and pyrites principle, with an applied wheel-case of gilt brass on the exterior; both the lock-plate and the barrel, which is 124 om. long, and which widens somewhat towards its muzzle, is tool engraved with figure subjects, terminals, lambrequins and general strapwork, gilt and plated with silver on a blued ground From the Collection of S.
