![C '4- ] in an undertaking of this kind, I truft not on my own judgment, as this would be but a weak and uncertain foundation, to attempt a contro- verfion of various opinions on this fubjeft, but am actuated by the verification of daily occur- rences, and practice has ftrongly confirmed the rectitude of this procedure ; for the fagacious and more accurate obfervers of Jater date, have corroborated the propriety of this fyftem, by advancing, for the benefit of mankind, all thofe cafes which have come under their notice, to- gether with the theory which was adopted to effect a cure, or at lead a mitigation of this difeafe. DIAGNOSIS. In treating of the pathognomonic fymptoms of the rheumatic ftate of fever, it is efTentially requifite to invefligate minutely thofe occur- rences, which particularly tend to character- ize it from all other difeafes, with which it is frequently blended by the young and unexpe- rienced, as it has been often verified that an er- roneous judgment in the nature of a difeafe has terminated with the mod ferious calamity, and blafted at once the reputation of the unfortu- nate practitioner.
