    • A Leaving the secluded scenes of Buttermere, and returning by the vale of Nevt^lands, you pass the Chapel of Buttermere, situated upon a small emi- nence above the village—ascend a steep hill, surpas- sed, however, by others of a much greater altitude— and continue through a solitude, without any object very interesting for some miles.—You then arrive at the greatest elevation, and descend gradually to the vale of Keswick. From Keswick an excellent road runs to the south, to the lakes in Lancashire and Westmoreland: Pur- suing this direction, the highway leads up a steep ascent from the town, for nearly a mile, command- ing a retrospective view, in many situations, of the vales of Derwentwater and Bassenthwaite. You turn then more to the right,Mescend the sloping side of a hill, and enter the pastoral valley of Legberth- waite, watered by a small ijivulet running north- wards. The mountains which form this vale are lofty, though unpicturesque, adorned but in few situa- tions with wood, and wanting that beautiful variety in their surface, which characterize those in some other situations. One of these, however, upon the left hand, is of a greater altitude, Helvellin, by some said to surpass Skiddaw. At the base of this moun- tain, and in tire tract of the road you now pursue, lies LEATHES WATER, OR THIRLMERE LAKE, Stretching in length about four miles, and of a very 4 G 2 irregular
