    lions, Emotions, and Affections, are equally ob- vious. Confining ourfelves therefore to what wc deem the genuine import of the words, in oppofition to the irregularities of cuflom, we (hall as often as it may be neceffary to obferve diftinctions, uniformly apply the term paffion, to the violent impreffion made upon our minds by the perception of fome- thing very firiking and apparently interefling; emo- tion, to the external marks, or vifible changes pro- duced by the impetus of the paffion upon the corpo- real fyftem : and affections, to the lefs violent, more deliberate, and more permanent impreffions, by caufes which appear fufficiently interefling. The range of affection, may be from thofe flronger feel- ings which are proximate to emotions, to the mildeft fenfations of pleafure or difpleafure we can poffibly perceive. Moft Writers, on the Pathology of the Mind, agree to diflinguifh between Appetites and Paflions. The former they refer to corporeal wants, each of which creates its correfpondent defire; and the in- dulgence of this defire is termed gratification. The latter they afcribe immediately to the mind. In this the Moderns differ from the Ancients. The word Appetitus, from which that of Appetite is de- rived.
