    ftruments of good. Defire moftly refers to the Hate in which we arc not. It folicits fome favourable change, and exerts itfelf to obtain it. Hatred alfo is univerfally applicable to whatever appears perni- cious or difpleafing in itfelf; averlion more immedi- ately concerns whatever appears pernicious or is difpleafing to us. Thefe Affections may be confi- dered as the fatellites of love and hatred, perpetu- ally accompanying them, and prompt to execute their orders. Wherever love or hatred direct their immediate attention, defire and averfion feek to ap- propriate or repel. Th us it appears that the love of good and hatred of evil; the defire of poffeffing good and efcaping evil, are the leading principles of our natures. The love of good commences with our exiftence, and the defire of good is coeval with our powers of dif- cernment. Neither of them will leave us, until we ceafe to exift, or lofe the confcioufnefs of our own fenfations and perceptions. Whatever diverfity there may be in our fituations, however various and oppofite the objects engaging our attention, how- ever verfatile our humours, thefe remain the immu- table principles of action. They pervade the ani- mal fyflem, as the electric fluid pervades the mate- rial; and though, like that, they may fometimes be latent.
