    aponeurosis, the significance of which was iirst shown by Pohl-Pincus, we must cling to the fact, that hereby an important factor is afforded for the premature loss of hair, particularly when we con- sider that the growth of muscles of the scalp inakes special progress at the exact time when premature loss of hair begins. In the hereditary trans- ui ittance of the shape of the skull as well as in the relationship of the muscles of the head to tlieir investment and to the epicranial aponeurosis lies an explanation of the inheritance of premature falling out of the hair. But this factor alone is not sufficient to explain the ailment in question. Apart from those cases in which the latter has been caused by an infection or an intoxication, cases in which after removal of the fundamental illness there appears a restitutio ad integrum of the scalp, people were for some time inclined to assign bacterial causes for alopecia praematura. In a former work I was enabled to prove that the researches, which originated from the early period of bacteriological research, could not withstand later criticism, and that the thera- peutic results, which had been recorded in a series of cases treated on antibacterial lines, could easily be explained in a different manner. A further factor, which had already for a long time been made responsible for the origin of premature loss of hair, is seborrhoea of the hairy scalp. Two forms were distinguished: seborrhoea oleosa and seborrhoea sicca. In the former, which
