    how to make the right use of ideals or specific pur¬ poses and plans, how to make an effective analysis of their tasks in order to find the best ways of performing them, how to master the higher phases of the art of reading or even how to make the conditions under which they must live and work most helpful for the things which they have to do. In these and many other respects ambitious young people may be helped so that they can learn how to work at their tasks in a more effective way than they would otherwise be able to do. It is the purpose of this book to present the results of our research along these lines, and to give an account of the success we achieved in a special “How to Study” course given to college students for the purpose of improving their point of view and their method of work. It aims to describe the factors which contrib¬ ute most to a student’s success in college and in later life, pointing out the kind of remedial instruction that should be given, if we wish to increase their chances for success; also to show what adjustments college stu¬ dents are now making to the factors which really determine one’s personal efficiency and success; and lastly, to present some of the results which we obtained by giving certain groups of college students one type of remedial instruction for the purpose of aiding their advancement in learning how to work at their tasks in a more effective way.
