![•2clly, The second objection came (no doubt face¬ tiously) from an honest citizen, “ In fair round helly, with good capon lined, viz. That in consequence of the river's being rendered brackishythe fresh wafer fishery would suffer,and perhaps be destroyed. How the small quantity of salt water running fromapipe of only seven or eight inches diameter into the river or indeed at any other place, could I produce these effects, could do all this mischief, (even supposing it were constantly running, which it would not be,) how it was to contaminate the river, or to ruin the fishery, I confess my optics were too dim to disco¬ ver, my understanding too dull to comprehend. AVithout noticing such objections I suggested that the refuse saltwater instead of being sent immediately to the river, might be usefully employed in the pre¬ paration of manure, and in the irrigation of some of our lands.
