Description

First day cover envelope with 6 postage stamps issued by the Royal Mail Group Ltd. on Thursday, 16 September 2010. It has all six stamps stuck to it and they have been cancelled by the official (Paddington pictoral) first day of issue cancellation stamp (a molecular diagram). It includes a colour, illustrated 'stiffener' card (Sir Alexander Fleming stained glass window, St. James' Church, Paddington). The stamps feature a hip joint replacement (Sir John Charnley, 1962), artificial lens implant in the eye (Sir Harold Ridley, 1949), malaria parasite transmitted by mosquitoes (Sir Ronald Ross, 1897), computed tomography scanner image (Sir Godfrey Hounsfield, 1971), heart-regulating beta blockers (Sir James Black, 1962) and antibiotic properties of penicillin (Sir Alexander Fleming, 1928) - supplied by Wellcome Images.
