    The number of horse-days for street cleansing was 19,344, and for watering 3,570, being an average of 62 and 30 respectively. The cost of street watering amounted to .£2,051 14s. 8d., for street cleansing £16,399 13s. id., and for snow removal £608 10s. 4cl; together making a total cost of £19,059 18s. id. The return for the quarter ended March 24th, 1898, shews that work equivalent to cleansing 64,370 streets, and 49,084 gullies was done. It will be noted that during this quarter an amount of work was done rather above the quarterly average in the way of street cleansing. During the last few weeks of 1897 (that is from Novem¬ ber 12th), four extra sweeping machines, each accompanied by a cart, necessitating, therefore, two horses and two drivers, and each followed by four other men (three “channellers” and one “filler”), were put on, and they continued to work during the first quarter of 1898. On the 28th January four other machines, with the same complement of men and horses, were put on and worked to the end of the quarter. The greater part of this extra work was of course done in the first quarter of 1898, but some of it appears in the table above given for 1897. The whole of this extra work comes, however, into the financial year ended March 25th, 1898, and is equivalent to the working of one machine with its complement of cart, horse, channellers, and filler for 108 weeks, at an approximate cost of £8 16s. per week, or £950 for the 108 weeks. Although this work was spread over a longer period, the eight new machines may be regarded as if they had worked together for 14 weeks. Regarded, then, solely in connection with the financial year, the work done corresponds to the cleansing of 222,126 streets and 162,171 gullies, at a total cost of £19,736—the increase of course being largely accounted for by these extra machines.
