![INFANT MORTALITY The main causes of death of children under one year of age were: Premature birth, 12; Congenital malformations and birth injuries, 12; Gastro Enteritis, i; Broncho-Pneumonia, 10. Rates 3.0 2.16 1.27 8.75 1.27 6.14 2.61 2.4 0.00 2.19 PREMATURE CHILDREN for Six months ended June, 1948 From the records kept of all children whose birth weight is 5]^ pounds or under, there were 26 premature babies born in the area, of which 17 were born at home, nine in nursing homes. One of these premature babies died within the first twenty-four hours, three died within the first month, while 22 survived after the first month. Arrangements have been made with the Walsall authority for admitting premature children, if necessary, to their hospital. ILLEGITIMATE CHILDREN In conjunction with other authorities, arrangements have been made with the Lichfield Diocesan Association for Moral Welfare, who continue to deal with illegitimate children and their mothers. OPHTHALMIA NEONATORUM One case was notified, and was admitted to hospital. The case recovered without any damage to the eyes. SECTION C—Infectious Diseases DIPHTHERIA Four cases were notified, compared with two in the previous year and 18 in 1946. Three cases of clinical diphtheria were removed to hospital. There was one fatal case.
