Description
This woodcut, representing a scholar-physician, appears in a Japanese edition of the 15th century Chinese medical text Wu Ting Zi su jie ba shi yi nan jing, (Wu Ting Zi's plain and simple exposition of the Canon of Eighty-One Problems) by
Ao Feng Xiong Jun (style name Zongli, known as Wu Ting Zi).
The image shows a spacious terrace, shaded by a spreading tree. On a table in the centre, a book and writing equipment are set out. An elderly man is depicted in profile, seated behind the table, with his left arm resting on it. A young male attendant in the foreground holds a scroll of paper. The older man is probably the author, Ao Feng Xiong Jun (style name Zongli, known as Wu Ting Zi), and the younger one is presumably his shutong - a boy serving in his study.
