About this work

Description

The programme investigates the cases of some of the 35 Scottish soldiers who were among the 305 British World War I servicemen sentenced to death for cowardice or refusal to obey orders. Public support has increased for relatives' demands for a pardon. Letters written by the servicemen and records of court martials are included in the programme as evidence that the men were suffering from post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). This condition was then known as battle shock and was not much regarded, but surviving fellow servicemen support relatives' belief that those condemned to death were suffering from this condition. Arguing against a pardon, General Sir Anthony Farrar Hockley, war historian, believes that we can only guess at the state of mind of these men and we cannot, in any case, alter the course of history.
