    CB2 2QH 24th January, 1969 Dr. Patríala Williams Science Rasaarch Council State House High Holborn London, W.C.I Dear Dr. Williams While I was attending the meating of the Cell Regulation Panel on Tuesday, your coilaague asked me if I would write something about an application for a rasaarch grant by Dr. D.J. Cove. I have read the copy of the application which was given to me. I have known Dr. Cove personally for a number of years, and am familiar with his work in outline, though not in detail. I have also consulted a colleague of mina who has read some of his racent unpublished papers. The general opinion saams to be that Dr. Cove is a very able gana ti cist, but that at the moment his biochemistry is occasionally somewhat amateurish. The problem ha is tackling is a vary important one. I do not think that I need enlarge on this as it is, of coursa, covered by our discussions on the Cell Regulation Panel. It is exactly tha sort of work which ought to ba supported. He has already obtained a good number of wall established and significant rasults. It is considerad that ha sometimes ovar-intarprats these rasults but this is not thought to be a serious failing, s inca such intaroreta- tions are capabla of being proved or disproved by further axoariments. Thera is, therafora, no doubt in my mind that Dr. Cove's work should be supported. The present point at issue is whether tha support should be extended to include Dr. Scazzocchio and Dr. Arst. There is no doubt that Dr. Scazzocchio is an excellant research worker. This can be clearly seen from the recommendation from Dr. Francois Jacob, who is not a parson to praisa people without good reason. I am unable to make a similar estimate of Dr. Arst, but I notice that he appears to be working at present with Dr. Jacob and that he has a National Science Foundation Fellowship. Both of thase facts assure that he is at least competent. Moreover, his academic record appears to be very good. /There
