![St. Mary Magdalen, Southwark; it is described as between the tenement of John the Miller on the : south, and that of Elias de Derby on the north, and ' between the tenement of Mabille daughter of Ralph, ;and a shop with a solar over, divided between the •two daughters of Ralph; the tenement contains ',7 ells a quarter and a half, by 6 ells and half a I quarter. A sub-gift is a tenement between that of Mabille and that of Emma her sister: this shop is II ell 2 inches ; the solar 1 ell, 1 quarter, half a quarter, r.and an inch. It would seem ridiculous to descend tto these minutiae, but it is a specimen of the business wf the time. This deed is interesting in another way, the character and importance of the witnesses:— Hugh de Zernemouth, bailiflp of Southwark [as the r.own of Southwark was yet vested in the Warrens this was probably his bailiff of Southwark] the other fwitnesses are Henry de Craspays, Richard de Lang- ford, clerk, John le Miller, Simon le Marshal, John ?3 Brasour, Roger le Pulter,,Henry de Darby, Henry (6 Hatton, Walter le Miller, clerk—dated South- •/ark, after the Epipliany, 1st Edw. II.” These ; ames suggest others, which I have found up Iid down this curious volume, e.g. : Bartholomeus cuarius, Richard Vitriarius, Martin Peletarius, i^alter le Textor, John le Tourtbaker, Thomas de [orden, cook, Thomas atte Grene de Bermondsey, ohn le Carpenter, William the Norman, John : Walter le Miller, William de Wandlesworth ordarius, John de Yelyng Brocher, Richard, Simon, A Roll since discovered in the Public Record Office states that Hugh de Gerneinuw, Bailiff of Southwark, holds it, and has held it ^ five years by writ-j)atent of the King.”—Hundred Rolls, 18 Edw.
