    the priory and hospital were destroyed. Stow, trom Matthew Paris, gives in one place the date as 1212, and tells of 3,000 people hemmed in on the bridge,' between the fires at either end, most of whom were burnt, drowned, or otherwise destroyed. IThis statement, in the highest degree improbable, is repeated by others, and Stow himself gives the date in another place as 1207. Close at hand, at the very :i;ime, was an important religious house, the Cluniac Pi’riory at Bermondsey, on the site where now are B3ermondsey Square and Church. A valuable little rolume of the annals of this priory has been pre- eerved (MS, Harleian 231, British Museum).'*' People tt hand, and so closely connected, must be looked ipon as the highest authorities for any facts as to bhis fire ; it would hardly seem possible that a fire of inch magnitude, and of such fatality, should be un- coticed. A fire is accordingly noted in these annals, lut the date given is 1207, and of the deaths by fire •: drowning there is no mention at all; the words ■:e: “In 1207 the church of the blessed Mary of lie Canons of Southwark and a great part of London lid Southwark were burnt.” The first hospital of St. Thomas, within the cecincts of the priory, and the priory, being now estroyed, we learn from the same annals that the iior and convent erected, the same year, near to ae site of their house, that is, on the right or western IJie of the highway into Southwark, a temporary |'»spital.® This building was in the emergency used Published in Rolls series of Monastic Annals, by Mr. Luard.
