About a week after the accident, he be¬ gan to be fenfible of weaknefs in his limbs : at the clofe of the following fortnight, the fpinal procefs of the fecond dorfal vertebra became a little protuberant; and in three weeks more, his complaints had increafed with fo much rapidity, that the ufe of his lower extremities was entirely loft, and all fenfation in them totally extindl: they were alfo rigid, the feet being pointed downwards, as if the gaftrocnemii mufcles were in a ft a te of fpafm.
