Description
This film shows various cases of mothers who have difficulty breast feeding their babies. Solutions to the problems are demonstrated, for instance a case of inverted nipples can be treated successfully with massage and the use of a breast pump. An inadequate milk supply can be supplemented with formula. Segment 1. The first mother shown was unable to feed her first baby and is pregnant with her second. She has inverted nipples. Before the birth, she is shown massaging and cleaning her nipples, then sucking the nipples out with a breast pump. A 'Natural Nursing Nipple Shield' is also used. The treatment is successful and she is shown breastfeeding her baby. The second mother does not produce much breast milk. Segment 2. The mother also pumps her breasts by hand ('expressing') to produce milk. She is shown massaging her breasts and sponging with alternate hot and cold water. The third case is a 'typical case of flabby breasts with an insufficient milk supply'. The mother massages her breasts, applies starch powder and performs exercises. The film ends with an intertitle stating 'the most important factor for successful breast feeding is that the mother should be calm and believe in her power to fulfil her natural functions'.
