$I HAVE been often led to imagine that Sydenham, when treating of the venereal difeafe, wrote more from theory than prac¬ tice ; for otherwile the many fatal confe- quences, that muft inevitably attend fuch a mode of practice, would have foon con¬ vinced this fagacious obferver of his er¬ ror 5 and the ingenous candour, that fo ftrongly charafteriles this great man, would have induced him, for the good of mankind, publicly to confefs it.
