![It is probable that in the Belleisle expedition the wounded numbered about 500, altliongh by no means all of them could have been under Hunter’s care. It is, however, likely that some of the patients were kept on the island until they had recovered, and so were under treatment for a long time. It is also evident that a certain number of the French wounded were left to the care of the British surgeons, for it was provided by Article XI of the capitulation that “ the officers and soldiers who are in hospital in the town and citadel shall be treated in the same manner as the srarrison, and after their recovery shall be furnished with vessels to carry them to France.” Hunter’s Position at Belleisle. The actual position occupied by Hunter during his stay on the island has hitherto been somewhat uncertain. I have, however, been fortunate enough to be supplied by Prof. F. Wood-Joues with a letter which shows that Hunter was not merely one of a surgical staff, but was in charge of the hospital, for ill addition to his appointment as staff surgeon,” he is described as the “ Deputy Purveyor,” and in that capacity he was supplied by the Government with money to be spent on the hospitals by himself. The letter is dated April I2tl], 1762, and was written only a short time before the forces at Belleisle were embarked for Portugal.
