    Afterward (its Ufe growing more and more) they added the Leaves to the Poppfs Heads in the pounding , bruizing, and expreffing the Juice, boiling it for fpeed’s lake to the corififtence of a Costfe&ion; which cooling, comes to the confi¬ dence that we have it in (1 mean the frelher and lofter fort that we have)which by the forcible poun¬ ding, fqueezing, and boiling, contracts a blackifo Colour like that of Horfe-Aloes on the out-fide to which Colour the Air does very much contribute, and prefling the Superficies dole together; for if you rudely tear a piece of that we have (which is all of this lalt kind) it looks at firft (as was laid) of a reddijh Yellow j but the Air, elpecially if moift or any Moifiure, and handling of it, and doling the Superficies together, foon makes it look blackilh again. This (as was intimated) is that we now call Opium, and have in common Ufe. Which being alfo in common Ufe among the Grecians when the Turks Conquer’d them, was by the Grecians themfelves called Pom (or Pos with the o mouthed widely) which came doubtlefly from V©-; the Meconium at la ft gaining the bet¬ ter Name of ''Ot©- ( or Pons or Pos) after the manner aforefaid to recommend it (as all Opium. is now call’d Theban) and the O in the beginning of ’W©-, palfed over in the Run of Difcourfe, which is not uncommon with Vowels, becaufe of their flat Sound, which is fo by reafon of the wide Pallage that the Breath has between the Tongue and the Palate in the Formation thereof; for mdenefs of Pallage is the caufe of Flatnefs; as Narrownifs (in Birds, Children, &c.) is the caufe oiSharpnefs of Sound; therefore the Sound of Vowels being fiat fading, and confequently not as much miffed as Jharper Sounds, we often omit Vowels, particularly in the beginning of Words, for Eafe and Shortnefs late Thus it comes to pa%
