    (wade Men of the Truth thereof; and the only way to do it, is to folve all Phenomena's thereby j for if it fails but in one, it is an infallible fign of its Inefficiency : There was no Reafon to omit any of the Phenomena's, if they could have difcern’d, that the Hypothecs would liave bom them; there¬ fore (as has been intimated) it implies a Confefc flon of its Incompetency. 4. I obferved, That ancient Authors writ of O- fium, before it came to be of common and general Ufe in the Day-time with Healthy Perfons, (as it fince is in many Nations) to Caufe a gay, pleafant, and good Humour\ take off Sadnefs, Melancholy, and Anxiety • To caufe Affurance, Boldnefs, Courage, Bravery, Magnani¬ mity, Euphory, or eafie undergoing of Labour, Jour- neys $ Promptitude in Bufmefs, Expeditenefs, and Se¬ renity | To excite to Venery, &c. Which Effects cannot be explained by that Suppofition of difabling the Spirits, and that they ufed Opium only Medi¬ cinally for the fake of fuch other Effeffs as might be tollerably well explicated by that Hypothecs | lb that they had not any Occafton, nor Inducement to look any farther. The Effects they gave it for was only; 1. To caufe Sleep, 2. To take off Pain. 3. To fiop Fluxes. 4. To Compofe the Spirits. 5. To caufe Perforation^ and Sweat. All which are not inconfiftent with the Hypothefs of diminishing or difabling the Spirits, as the other are* and therefore might well deceive them 5 For, Firfl:, Sleep is cauled by diminiffiing the Spirits by Labour9 Watching, &c% as is moft notorious over the whole World \ lb other Things that diminifh the Spirits, as Bleeding, Vomiting, Purging, and many other Caufes of diminiffiing thereof, do in¬ cline us to Sleep.
