!['Vvt CHAP. III. Of Waking font a. THE Difeafe called Waling Coma, or Coma vigili is put among fleeping Diefafes; ycc becaufe ic is another Condition different ft omt he reft, we will creac of ic in this Chapcer by ic lelf. This Coma vigil, is a Difeafe in which the Pacicnc liech his Eyes (hut as if he were afleep. when he is awake and dftradfcedj and if you touch him, he prefencly openeth his Eyes, and looks ftrangelv , and fals aflfeep again, which ishindred by divers ftrange imaginations and fancies. TbisDdealeCytfJe» placech as a mean, between a Frenzy and Lethargy, and callech it Typbo- mania. CV%(E ] The ufual Caufe of this Difeafe, is Choller mixed with FIegm,by which humors She Brain is made roo moift, or it is (welled or inflamed * from whence, either the T urn or called iErifypelas oedematofum, or oedema(.Erifypelatofum do arife. But becaufe tbofe humors are diver fly mixed, fomsimes a greater proportion of the one than of another, ic ctimes topafs that the Difeafes .from them a*e divert: for if Choller be chief, then it is a Delirium or Dotage, and the fick man fleep- erh bur little though his eyes be fhut *, but if Flegm prevail, che Pactenc doth fleep more, andislefs doting, and being railed makes lefs noife, and is not to foolifh. This Coma vigil comes by fympathy from Chollerick vapors mixed with Flegmatick char fly into the Head j which happens in Faavets that come from mixed Humors, efpecially in halt Tertians, which are made of a Terciananda Quotidian. We may laf* ly affirm that this Difeafe comech from Vapors, Amply hot and moift in ftrong Feavers, becaufe flecp comes from moifture, and waking comes from hear. VlAQ'NOS'tlC'Ii'j The Diagnofis, or knowledgof this Difeafe, is plain enough by whac hath been faid, That rhey which have it, lie with their Eye:» (hut, and leem to fleep, yet they cannot fleep, but tofs and tumble, lift cbemfelves up (uddenly, ftrivetogetoutofthebed, and then fall a- gain afleep. The divers Caufes are eafily known from what hath been faid. This Difeafe is accounted dangerous if the Brain have a fweliing or Infiamacion, or if it be over¬ come with the humors above mentioned, namely Choller and Flegm > or if it come of vapors which arife fom the malignant humor of a Peftilent Feaver. If the Dotage, or Delirium be ftrong, ic produceth a Convulfion, for it comes of a Humor or va¬ por which is very fharp, which falling upon Nervous parts caufech a Convulfion. A true Coma vigil is cured as a Frenzy and Lethargy ‘y and if it incline mofttoa Frenzy, then the Medicines proper for that ate moft robe ufedi iftoaLechargy, then the Medicines proper for thac. But a Coma that comech by Sympathy, is cured by curing che malignam Feaver from whence it comeih -, but the more peculiar Remedies mu ft alfo be ufed which draw and keep hu- mors from the Brain in the beginning of theDileafe, as bleeding in che Arm and Foot, Vinegar of Rofes applied ro che Forehed, Clyfters, Cupping-glaffes to the Shoulders, Back, Buttock», Thrphr, opening the Head Vein, applying Leeches to the Temples, andfaehind che Ears, and laying living' Creatures to the Head to diffoive the humor. CHAP. IV. Of the Sleeping Difeafe s called, Catoche, and Cata- lepfis, or Congelation. THcre is fome Confufion among Authors about this Cat debt \ for fome rake ic for Coma vi¬ gil, Waking Coma *, others for Catalepfis: <P ait l us gave them the cauie of their dffe- rencej in bis Third Book, and che Eighth Chapter, he treats of a two-fold Catocbe', and firft under thac name, he (peaks of a Coma vigil in the end, under che fame name, he fpeaks of Catalepfis. Cuftom hath brought ic co pais, thac Catocbe, and Catalepfis, are taken for one and the tame Difeafe in all Authors; the Lacins call it commonly Congelation, ur ftiffnefs of che Body. Ic is a Difeafe feldomfeen, and to be admired, and chofe Authors which have feen the Difeafe do think it fo much worth the obfervation, as to defaibe the whol pafiage and Hiftory of it.
