Chinese woodcut: Axillary abscess

Woodcut illustrating the 17th century Chinese medical text Yangyi daquan (Great Compendium of The Medicine of Sores) Gu Shicheng, from an edition published in 1901 (27th year of the Guangxu reign period of the Qing dynasty). It shows the disease location for ye yong (axillary abscesses). At the onset of the disease, the skin becomes red and inflamed, with a hard nodule below the surface, which gradually becomes softer, produces pus and bursts. The term corresponds to axillary furuncle, acute suppurative axillary lymphadenitis, etc.
