Spices: chilli This image shows red chilli peppers drying in the sun in Bhutan. These are the seed pods of the tropical plant Capsicum frutescens. The pods are ground to produce red cayenne pepper and chilli powder. Chilli is widely used in Asia and is the main spice used in South American food.
