    Somewhere about the year of Queen Victoria’s Diamond Jubilee, a piece of land in Cambridge Road, Middlesbrough, was purchased by Mr. Thomas Carter with the intention of building a hospital upon it—a hospital which he also planned to endow. This intention was not realised at the time of his death, but provision was made in his will for the carrying out of the project by his Trustees. Knowing the mind of the testator, and his abhorrence of the multiplicity of appeals to the generosity of the charitable public, the Trustees have en- deavoured, before erecting the hospital, to accumulate sufficient funds to equip and endow the same. The erection of the Hospital has been delayed for several years, owing to the changed circumstances arising during and after the World War of the last decade. This necessitated the accumulation of a much larger sum, not only for building, but for equipment and endowment also, the complete scheme requiring approximately £100,000. Having accumulated the necessary funds the Trustees then decided to form a separate Trust for hospital purposes, and in 1923 the following trust was created by deed: The Carter Bequest Hospital Trust,.with the following persons as trustees—Miss Edith Carter, Messrs. Randolph Gray and George A. Archibald, these three being the Trustees of the founder’s will. To their number were added four more, as follows: Mrs. Penhale and Mrs. Steel, Messrs. Chas. E. Elmhirst and Fohn Hotson. The Trustees, numbering seven in all, formed a Hos- pital Trust, and instructed Messrs. Kitching & Archibald, Architects, to prepare plans for an up-to-date Hospital, to be erected on the site in Cambridge Road, Linthorpe. Tenders were asked for on January 31st, 1923, for the erection of the present building, and that of Messrs. W. Pearson & Son, of West Hartlepool, at £22,635 was accepted, and in February 1924, they began to prepare the ground to receive the building. The actual building was begun in March 1924, and went on steadily (with one interruption—that of a six weeks strike), being completed in October, 1925. The structure is of a thoroughly substantial nature, being - built of brick, faced with Eaglescliffe sandfaced bricks, and artificial stone dressings, giving a soft and mellow aspect to the building, which is of two-storey height.
