This force, by which, to give a popular illustration, a railroad train is made to bear more heavily on the right-hand rail of the track along which it advances, is the key to the explanation of many xjhenomena in connection with atmospheric and ocean currents. By considering the influence of this deflection it becomes possible to construct the following table, which shows which winds will generally prevail on each side of areas of high and low pressure: THE PREVAILING WINDS WILL BE— Low pressure. High i^ressure. On the N. side IST and E S. and W. On the IsT. W. side ]Sr. W. and N. E W. and N S. E. and S. W. On the W. side E. and S. On the S. W. side On the S. side S.W.andlSr.W S.and W .. S. This same regular distribution of the winds is shown by the arrows in the accompanying diagrams: AKEAS OF HIGH PRESSURE. AREAS OF LOW PRESSURE. The deflection from the radial line {i. e., to the right) is not always nor usually 90°, as represented in the diagrams, but the angle is generally between 30^ and 60°, amounting to 60° or 80° only in case of severe storms, cyclones, &c. In using the above table or diagrams, if, for illustration, it be assumed that the observer is placed within an area of unusually low pres- sure, then on the northwest side of its center he should find the wind blowing from some point in the horizon between](https://iiif.wellcomecollection.org/image/b21070374_0024.jp2/full/800%2C/0/default.jpg)
