Venetiis, apud Aldum Romanum, mense Maio, 1501 * * First Aldine edition. The long “rights reserved” colophon shows how immediately the Virgil (only issued in April) must have been produced by the indefatigable pirates of Lyons. Wormed at beginning and end, otherwise a good clean copy of this EXCESSIVELY RARE Aldine. 344 PErTRARCH (Francesco) Le cose volgari di Messer Francesco Petrarcha, green morocco, gilt and blind tooled, gilt gauffred edges, doublé with red morocco, with the initials A. F. P. in centre ornament of inside front cover and “In omnibus respice finem” inside back cover sm. 8vo. ILmpresso in Vinegia nelle case d Aldo Romano nel anno 1501 del mese di Luglio, ete. *.* The first Aldine edition of Petrarch, and the first Italian book printed in the Aldine script type. Perfectly complete copy (see Renouard) with additional sheets A and B following’the colophon, B containing the errata not found in most copies. <A few minute stains and wormholes. 345 Juvenalis. Persius, vellum Venetiis, in aedibus Aldi mense Augusto, 1501 *,* First issue of the first edition, the title having simply the words Juvenalis. Persius, and no anchor. The pages are unnumbered and the colophon reads as follows: “Heliconidasque; Pallidamque; Pyrenen. Melos unico | non sine ratione imprimendum curavimus, quia non aliter producitur quam. €A@p.a apud Homerum et HéAoo apud eundem ratione immutabilis.” Good clean copy. RARE. 346 Juvenalis. Persius, half morocco sm. 8vo. Venetiis, in aedibus Aldi et Andreae Soceri, mense Augusto, 1501 *.* Second impression of the first Aldine edition, to be recognised by the difference in this issue having the anchor on the title, the first not; being paged, whereas the first is not, and by the colophon being different, that to this issue reading as follows: “Melos unico ] non sine ratione imprimendum curavimus, quia non aliter produ- citur quam éAwpia apud Homerum et HéAoo apud eundem ratione immutabilis.” Has a few MS. marginal notes. 347 Juvenalis. Persius, polished red morocco gilt eatra, inside borders, g. e. with Aldine anchor on sides, by Lortic 1501 *,* Very pretty copy of the second impression of the first edition, as above. 348 Juvenalis. Persius, old calf sm. 8v0. [From the Press of Lyonaise forgers of Aldus, 1501] *,* Evidently rushed out by the Lyons Press at once, on publication of Aldus’ first issue of his first edition, as it conforms to this and is without pagination, which is found in the second Aldine impres- sion.
