This pamphlet exhibits a curious in- stance of a boy tracing the history of what he pro- fesses to consider ‘‘ diseased forms of literature ””— Rabelais, Boccaccio, Rochester, Sedley, Congreve, Wycherley, Smollett, Sterne, and the rest—yet show- ing by his condemnations that he had taken some care to seek out, for instance, ‘*‘ the uncastrated edition of Rochester’s poems.” He would have interested the modern psycho-analyst. 488 Sherlock (William, D.D., Rector of St. George, Botolph Lane, London) A Practical Discourse of Religious Assemblies. A fine clean copy. ; S.T.C. 1598, One of the rarest books in English poetry, and of a specially: romantic interest in that Baxter was tutor in Greek to Sir Philip Sidney. The preliminary poem gives a poetical account of Sidney’s way of life and entourage at Troy, in Monmouthshire,. where Baxter was vicar. The second poem, however, is on a larger scientific knowledge, beginning with astronomy & going on to a detailed catalogue & description of trees, animals, & the phenomena of the reuacare physical world. No mineral or precious stone seems to be overlooked, & the virtues & uses of all are referred to. There is an important page on the Load-Stone, with this couplet : ** By this they saile, else knowe not where they were, Such sov’reigntie in Ship doth Magnes beare.” . The fame of this book for its Sidneian associations has perhaps lessened the attention it merits as an epitome of Elizabethan science. No copy seems to have come up for sale since 1926. 492 (Sixpenny Reprints). — [Barham (R. H.)] The Ingoldsby Legends. Cable Address : Cruikshank, Leech, and Tenniel. 64 pp..
