    Hours, till at length the Heat becomes con- ftant and intenfe. The Patient then complains of an acute Pain in the Head, of Heat and Sore- nefs, rather than Pain, in the Throat, Stiffhefs of the Neck, commonly of great Sickneis, with Vomiting, or Purging, or both (b). The Face foon after looks red and fwelled, the Eyes inflamed and watery, as in the Meafles; with Reftleffnefs, Anxiety, and Faintnefs. ^ This Difeafe frequently feizes the Patient in the fore Part of the Day: As Night approaches, the Pleat and Reftleffnefs increafe, and conti¬ nue till towards Morning; when, after a flior£ difturbed Slumber (the only Repofe they of¬ ten have during feve.ral Nights) a Sweat breaks out; which mitigates the Heat and Reftleffnefs, and gives the Difeafe fometimes the Appearance of an Intermittent. If the Mouth and Throat be examined foon after the firft Attack, the Uvula and tfonfils appear fweikjd; and thefe Parts, to- } ' gether (b) The Vomiting and Purging were but feldom ob¬ served to accompany this Diieafe, at its firit Appearance amongit us, as I have been informed by fome Phyiicians of Eminence, who faw it early j but it is generally agreed, that thefe Symptoms almott conhantly attended, ih the Manner here defenbed, during the Years 1747 an(* x74^j the l ime in which thefe Qbfervations weie collected : And I have fmee found, that the above-mentioned Symp¬ toms have not fo regularly appeared as at that lime.
