    The compiler has attempted, so far as space would permit, to obtain a cumulative effect by multiplying testimonies on important points. For the sake of readers who may think such repetitions superfluous, and who may prefer to take a bird’s-eye view of medieval history, the more important passages have been distinguished by an asterisk in the Table of Contents. His hearty thanks are due to the following who have kindly permitted him to print copyright material: to the Committee of the Guildhall Library for the very numerous extracts from Riley’s Memorials of London, to the Early English Text Society for a still more liberal use of their publications ; to Messrs Constable and Co. for the extracts from Arbers Re¬ prints (Section IV.
