    parts of the encephalon. * voluntary motion. This, however, can only be considered as a probable opinion. Such it has long been thought by many physiologists, and though the grounds on which this conclusion rests appear to be more secure than they formerly were, the proof is still defective. Pathological investigations may hereafter supply the evidence that is wanting. If the examples of accurate research into the anatomy of the different parts of the brain, connected with physiological and patho- logical inquiries, of which Dr. Abercrombie, Dr. Bright, and Dr. Hodgkin have set examples in this country, should be followed, they cannot fail of leading to a full elucidation of this and many other subjects hitherto involved in doubt. POSTSCRIPTUM. Since the preceding observations were sent to the press, I have been informed by Dr. Hodgkin, that Dr. Foville’s opinions respecting the functions of different organs in the encephalon were not originally sug- gested by the discoveries of Sir Charles Bell, though he has appealed to these discoveries as affording a probable evidence in their support. They were communicated to Dr. Hodgkin during the winter 1822—23, as the result of inquiries in which Dr. Foville, then a student at the Salp^triere, had been for some time engaged. Sir Charles Bell’s dis- coveries were not at that time as yet matured, nor had the first notice of them been given to the Institute by M. Magendie, who, in Dr. Hodgkin’s hearing, first announced them to that scientific body as the discoveries of Bell. THE END.
