    GOLDEN KULES OF PEDIATRICS PART I. GOLDEN RULES OF DIAGNOSIS. GENERAL RULES. Practice the quiet manner and the gentle voice. Win the confidence of the children; do not frighten them. Undressing the child completely is always neces- sary to make a thorough physical examination, but it may be unnecessary to make a complete examina- tion. Always tell the child the truth; it imparts confi- dence. Nothing is worse than to state that you will not hurt the child and then do so. The order in which you obtain the facts in study- ing a case is not essential, provided you get all of them. It is as necessary to inquire carefully into the susceptibilities and immunities of the patient as into the nature of the present illness. Some dis- eases give an immunity (measles, chickenpox, etc.), others increase the susceptibility (rheumatism, ton- sillitis, endocarditis). The infant is peculiarly susceptible to diseases of
