    How to Make a Mixture of any Desired Nutritive Ratio. There are two methods by which the correct proportions can be worked out, one purely arithmetical but tedious, the other a very simple algebraical method as follows :—Barley contains 65 per cent, of digestible protein, and T2 x 23 + 62-2 4- 2-5 = 67-5 per cent, of nonprotein reckoned as carbohydrate. Fish meal contains 50 per cent, of digestible protein, and 4 2 x 2 3 = 97 per cent, of non¬ protein reckoned as carbohydrate. Let x = the number of lb. of barley to be mixed with 1 lb. of fish meal in order that the mixture may have a nutritive ratio of 1:7; then 67'5* 4- 97 the nutritive ratio of the mixture will be ——— - ■—-, and 6-5x + 50 this must be = 7. Therefore 675f + 9J =4-. ••• 67-5x + 97 = (6-5* + 50) x 7 b5a: + 50 1 .-. 67-5x + 97 = 45-5* + 350, .-. 22a: = 340'3, .'. x — 15 5.
