    HINTS ON THE BREEDING AND REARING OF FARM ANIMALS. By THOMAS WALLEY. Price 2s., Post Free 2s. 2d. We particiilarly direct attention to the advice as to the description of sire and dam that should be used to ensure vigorous, healthy offspring. Special stress is laid upon the importance of sound structural conformation on both sides. 'Any defection is,' says the professor, 'like the naark of Cain, indelible and everlasting in the new generation, and very largely also in the generation that may be born after, and it is very frequently intensified by that maddest of all mad proceedings, breeding in and in.' As to external form, there must be general harmony of proportions, and such development of frame as ^vill allow of the free and healthy action of the internal organs. The remarks' as to the form and quality of the bones of the extremities are admirable, and the extreme importance of encouraging for breeding purposes only those sires that are perfectly sound and free from hereditary effects claims our fullest sympathy. Several telling instances are recorded _ to prove how certainly transmissible are many of the bony enlargements ; and the same is equally true of defects in internal organisation. The one maxim insisted on is to breed sound, and to breed true. The condition of breeding animals, and the treat- ment of the female during the breeding period are matters very ably discussed ; indeed, every word of this very able paper should be carefully studied by the breeder of farm stock. On the subject of abortion, the pre- vailing causes, including the probable effects of ergotised grasses on the cow, are discussed at length, and it is clear that Professor Walley is disposed to regard the fungus as a frequent cause of irritation.—The Field.
