    Even the little frontier towns and mining camps have their layouts and their devotees. Arrests are being constantly made in San Francisco, Virginia City, New Orleans, and occasionally in Chicago. The following newspaper clippings from the Stockton Independence, of August 2, i88i, were sent me by Dr. G. A. Shurtleff, Superintendant of the State Insane Asylum, at Stockton, California. POLICE COURT. In the Police Court yesterday J. K. Simpson, Patrick Timmons, Thomas Finn, and Taylor Snyder pleaded guilty to drunkenness, and were sent up five days each in default of $5 apiece. Joseph Howe was fined a like amount, and given till four o'clock to skip. Besides these fines were imposed : Otto Myrrick, drunk, $5 ; same, disturb- ing the peace, $10 ; David Smith, drunk, $5 ; George Orr, drunk> five days. Harry Block and Austin Vance, drunk, forfeited $5 each. (H. H. Weber forfeited $40, and Maud McCleary, Mrs. Rogers, and Wan Hing, $20 each, for opium-smoking.) John Morgan forfeited $10 by not answering the charge of disturbing the peace. Collec- tions yesterday, $125. RAID ON AN OPIUM DEN. Monday morning at I o'clock officers Cohen, Collins, Homage, and Edwards raided an opium den located in a wooden building back of a house of ill fame on Market Street, between El Dorado and Hunter streets, and captured four smokers—a white man, a Chinaman, and two white women—all stretched out on bunks and enjoying a quiet smoke. The officers also captured the outfit, which consisted of foui pipe bowls, one pipe stem, a small opium lamp and several boxes oi opium.
