About this work
Description
This is a small advertising card from1913 printed on pale green card advertising Mr. Smedley's dental surgeries at 39, Beauchamp Place, Brompton Road, London (near Harrod’s) and 27, Grand Parade, Brighton. Both practices are located in well-to-do, upmarket areas. A dentist in poorer parts of London would have had less disposable income for such things as advertising, although if they did then this was a common way for them to advertise their services at the time. The card promises "really painless extractions" and reduced fees to servants and others of limited means as well as an astounding offer of a complete set of teeth mounted on 18 carat gold plate for £5 and 5 shillings (£5.25p) with a ten year guarantee. This was still a lot of money in those days. The front shows an illustration of an attractive young woman's head and neck with two roses in her hair and a broad smile of perfect teeth.
