The information obtained is with regard to the sanitary arrangements of the houses in detail, food and water supplies, schools, &c., attended, and any other probable cause or source of infection. These particulars, where one house only is affected, often show the definite cause of that single case ; or, where many houses are attacked, may lead to the detection of the cause of the general outbreak. All sheets of particulars are numbered and kept for future reference. The deaths from Zymotic Diseases—that is from the seven chief Zymotic Diseases, namely. Smallpox, Measles, Scarlet Fever, Diphtheria, Whooping Cough, Diarrhoea, and Fever (Typhoid, &c.) —numbered 91, being 12% of all the deaths. Diarrhoea was responsible for 53 of the 91 deaths. The Zymotic death-rate was equal to 1-78 per thousand of the population estimated to be living at the middle of the year ; whilst that of England and Wales was 2T5, and that of the 67 other large towns 2-41. The death-rate of the six principal Zymotic Diseases (excluding Diarrhoea), was equal to 0‘75 per thousand of the estimated population. Below I give the Zymotic death-rate for the past five years of this Borough, and also the figures for England and Wales:— 1897 1896 1895 1894 1893 1892 Burton-on-Trent England and Wales 1- 78 2- 15 -3-83 2-18 1- 48 2- ]4 2-00 2-25 2-15 316 t3-23 2-78 * Measles and Diphtheria. ; Measles and Whooping Congh.](https://iiif.wellcomecollection.org/image/b28967215_0016.jp2/full/800%2C/0/default.jpg)
