Very large draughts Ihould not be taken at once ; for they overcharge the ftomach, produce indi- geftion and flatulence, and foice up the mid- ** riff too much, which greatly embarrafles the refpiration ; therefore Hippocrates advifes to drink, in thofe difeafes, out of a cup with a ** narrow mouth, probably both that the liquor ** and vapour might be prefcrved warm longer •* and that lefs might be drank at a time, and '* alfo that the fleam might be more copioufly ** carried into the mouth and nofe. — Many ** kinds of drink he advifes for rhis purpofe, but particularly recommends barley-water, ** honey and water, oxymel and vinegar and *' water.
