The following pages form the twelfth chapter of Gisbome's* Enquiry into the Duties of Men in the Higher and Middle Classes of Society in Great Britain, resultmg from their respective Stations, Professions, and Employments; and are extracted in the hope that they may be more widely circulated among the members of the Medical Profession, and consequently more useful, if pubhshed in a separate form. They are reprinted from the Sixth Edition in two volumes 8vo. London, 1811. Nothing has been altered or omitted, because, though some few passages are a httle old-fashioned and out of date, the Editor found nothing in the sentiments to dis- approve of or condemn; and nothing has been added, because the little work is already complete in itself according to the writer's own plan, and • The Rev.
