    ures should bring relief to the pain and inflamma- tion in a day or two. Examine the part daily, and look out for suppuration in the inflamed tumor— which is possible, but not probable. The presence at its centre of blood-clot, or fluid blood, may con- vey the sensation of fluctuation, when pus in reality has not formed; and I w^arn you of this, because it is better that you should not be officious with the knife. I prefer that the inflammation should ter- minate by resolution, if possible ; and that the little tumor be left to shrivel away into a small tab of integument, which, with prudence and cleanliness, will rarely cause trouble. If you cut into one of these tumors when inflamed, the incision is not ne- cessarily followed by relief, as when the tumor is not inflamed—unless pus has formed ; and an un- necessary incision might possibly be followed by inconvenient haemorrhage, or even by fistula. The inflamed tumor often becomes cedematous, in consequence of retardation in its circulation by - the grasp of the sphincter muscle, which, irritated by its proximity, also adds greatly to the local pain by its spasmodic and irregular contractions. A large cedematous external haemorrhoid is sometimes moulded into an odd shape by the pressure of the nates; but, by the time the watery swelling has come on, the extreme pain and inflammation have
